Just seeing the reduced number of steps there really is a sign of the times to me. But on a subscription service, you can just pick something that seems like it might be interesting and give it a spin. People in the game industry can spend a lot of time trying to market and sell games to users. If it’s something from a popular series, you may be able to get into it instantly, but if it’s an all new title, users may be more hesitant. This has been how the tides have been shifting with media and entertainment for a while now, and we feel it’s time we embarked on this journey along with.įor games, it can usually take time to actually get the product in the user’s hands and have them try it out. Everyone can find the best way that fits them, all at a fixed cost each month. You can take a peek at new shows while you’re out, then go home and finish watching your TV. People don’t just enjoy these services at their TV at home, they watch them on the go through their phone, in bed on their tablet, just about anywhere. Maybe it’s a bit obvious to say this now, but mobile devices have really helped these kinds of platforms soar. There are video-based platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, music streaming services and magazine services, pretty much there’s something now for any kind of content you can think of. This kind of subscription model is a first for us as well, but it’s become a very popular medium. You pay a certain amount each month and you get to play any game they have within their service, any time. ![]() Many of you may know, Apple Arcade is a subscription-based platform. Now, I finally get to show everyone what a Platinum game for mobile would look like. And I’ve always responded, we’d be glad to enter that market if we have a good idea and the right resources for it. I actually have been asked a lot if PlatinumGames would ever consider doing mobile. ![]() This will be our first time collaborating with Apple Arcade, and our first release for iOS. This makes it our second official IP release, following The Wonderful 101: Remastered! Now, we’ve reworked the title for Apple Arcade, where it releases as an original Platinum title. Yes, some of you may realize it was a title we had been working on for iOS with DeNA some time back. I think there may be a few of you that are surprised by this sudden announcement. We’ll see how it pans out when the game launches for iOS this summer. We just released a new title for Apple Arcade: Though it’s not being helmed by legendary director and Twitter master Hideki Kamiya, it appears that World of Demons is an honest, well-made attempt to translate Platinum combat to a mobile space. While the devs are adamant that the game is in fact not a direct spiritual successor to Ōkami (instead merely sharing many of the same inspirations), given its graphical style and score (composed by Ōkami’s own Hiroshi Yamaguchi) it’s a bit hard to swallow. It’s an intriguing way of allowing for both the gambling crowd and those who are willing to pay for something a bit more immediately substantial. The game is free-to-play, featuring a gacha system for summoning new helper yokai as well as as more permanent buffs in the beckoning system - which offers permanent, fixed upgrades instead of offering your skills up to the role of a dice. It also contains the ubiquitous Platinum dodging (seen in games like Bayonetta), helper yokai who can provide skills on a cooldown, and a finisher slash move that is uncannily similar to Ōkami’s Power Slash. Revolving around slaying mythical Japanese yokai, the game focuses on positioning in combat, affording you 360 degree movement with auto-attacking in range. And they’ve brought back that title’s traditional Japanese ink and music aesthetic, paired it with the iconic Platinum fluidity of combat, and partnered with DeNA to reveal World of Demons, a demon-slaying hack-and-slash title for iOS. Do you like Ōkami? Trick question - everybody loves Ōkami, including developer PlatinumGames (made up of former Clover Studio devs, which made the mythological classic). ![]()
